About the Company:
Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is an independently governed institute within the College of Health Sciences at Makerere University and has the mission “To strengthen health systems in Africa, with a strong emphasis on infectious diseases, through research and capacity development.” IDI has operations across Uganda as well as in a number of other African countries and has a staffing of over 1,000 managing multiple projects in research, clinical services, public health and training.
Job Summary: The Transport Assistant will provide safe and reliable transportation of project staff, visitors and commodities including maintenance of the vehicle in good mechanical and functional condition in compliance with all vehicle related legal and institutional requirements.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide safe, comfortable and reliable transportation of staff as per approved travel plans.
- Transport approved commodities to designated areas by authorized staff on project business
- Deliver documentation and materials as well as any other written or verbal communication to and from locations designated by authorized staff
- Maintain project vehicle in good mechanical and functional condition including and not confined to regular fuelling, servicing and cleaning of the interior and exterior.
- Perform regular preventive maintenance and minor repairs where possible and authorized.
- Notify FAA/Administrator of any repairs necessary and to oversee/account/supervise such repairs.
- Ensure that all required documentation for administrative use such as mileage, fuel usage and trip authorization tracking information are always kept up-to-date.
- Ensure that all legal, institutional and local government requirements and dues are met in good time and/or regularly renewed e.g. third party and comprehensive insurance parking fees, registration and licenses etc.
- Ensure that all reasonable measures are taken to protect the institute vehicle from theft or damage e.g. by ensuring that it has adequate security and accident features such as alarms, bull horns, functional tracker etc.
- Any other duties as may reasonably be assigned.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Uganda Advanced Certificate with credit in English
- Person Specification
- Uganda Advanced Certificate with credit in English
- At least 5years of proven Accident free vehicle driving in Uganda preferably in a reputable institution
- Familiarity with the layout and location of key facilities in the designated region
- Knowledge of current traffic rules and regulations
- A minimum of valid Ugandan D permit classes including B and DL(DL(D1) (DM Class) is an added advantage
- Knowledge of basic vehicle mechanics, defensive driving and 4*4 operation is an added advantage
- Physical ability and willingness to drive for long hours and occasionally on weekends and/or holidays
- Ability to communicate competently vehicle policies and complete vehicle related documentation
- Understand client confidentiality and exhibits a high level of ethical conduct
- First aid certificate is an added advantage.
- Excellent communication and time management skills.

- Flexible and reliable.
