About Organisation:
The Consortium for Enhancing University Responsiveness to Agribusiness Development (CURAD) is a public-private Partnership founded in 2012 by Makerere University, NUCAFE, and NARO. It supports farmers, agribusiness startups. and young entrepreneurs by fostering innovation, productivity, and leadership in the agricultural sector. CURAD serves as an agribusiness innovation incubator to create jobs and improve incomes.
CURAD is part of a consortium implementing the Strengthening Agribusiness Youth Employment (SAYE), led by Heifer Project International in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation. The project aims to improve the socio-economic well-being of 250,000 youth (70% women, 3% with disabilities) In Uganda’s Busoga sub-region by 2029, focusing on skills development, market access, finance, and enabling environments. CURAD specifically delivers skills development and youth empowerment in decision-making.
Job Summary:   The Incubation Officer — Meat and Dairy Value Chain will be responsible for supporting, mentoring, and guiding agripreneurs, and startups in the meat and dairy sectors to develop value-added products, improve operational efficiencies, and access profitable markets.. The role involves fostering innovation, providing technical and business advisory support, scaling up businesses, and enhancing sustainability across the value chain to maximize profitability and economic impact.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Incubation Program Management
- Identify gaps and opportunities in the meat and dairy value chain and recommend targeted interventions.
- Design, implement, and manage incubation programs for meat and dairy startups, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
- Develop and execute detailed plans for business support, coaching, and mentoring activities.
- Monitor and evaluate the progress of incubated enterprises, providing tailored support to address specific needs
Value Addition Development:
- Support businesses in developing value-added meat and dairy products, such as processed meats, cheeses, yogurt, and specialty items.
- Facilitate the adoption of technologies for meat and dairy processing, preservation, and packaging.
- Provide technical guidance on quality assurance, shelf-life improvement, and food safety compliance.
- Promote sustainable practices, including waste utilization for by-products like bone meal, leather, and whey
- Collaborate with stakeholders to promote sustainable practices and efficient production
Market Access and Branding:
- Establish market linkages for value-added products by connecting businesses with buyers, distributors, and export markets.
- Support businesses in developing branding, packaging, and certification strategies to enhance market competitiveness.
- Assist in identifying and meeting regulatory requirements for local and international markets.
Sustainability and Innovation:
- Encourage sustainable practices in oilseed production and processing, including waste minimization and eco-friendly technologies.
- Promote research and innovation to develop new value-added products and improve existing processes.
Monitoring and Evaluation:
- Track and evaluate the progress of incubated businesses in product development, market access. and profitability providing regular reports to management.
- Develop and maintain a database of incubated startups and their progress.
- Document success stones and lessons learned to continuously improve the incubation process.
- Prepare periodic reports on program outcomes, including metrics on value addition and impact.
- Use data to measure impact and identify areas for improvement within the incubation program.
Ecosystem Development
- Foster collaborations and partnerships among stakeholders and industry players, including farmers, processors. researchers, and policymakers, to leverage resources for the benefit of the incubated enterprises and enhance the meat and dairy ecosystem.
- Advocate for policy reforms that support value addition innovation, and market development in the sector.
- Promote collaborations between startups and established businesses in the meat and dairy sectors.
- Represent the incubation program at industry forums and networking events.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Agribusiness. Animal Science or a related field.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in agribusiness or entrepreneurship support, with a focus on meat and dairy
- Strong understanding of meat and dairy processing technologies. food safety standards. and market trends.
- Strong knowledge of the meat and dairy value chains, including production, processing, marketing, and regulatory frameworks.
- Proven experience in supporting businesses in product diversification and value addition.
- Excellent project management, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Proficiency in tools for business analysis, data management, and reporting.
- Experience in mentoring startups and facilitating access to finance and markets.
