Job Summary
The mid-level Network Engineer (Level 1) provides essential support in maintaining, monitoring, and troubleshooting the organisationâs network infrastructure under the guidance of the Senior Network Engineer. This mid-level role is designed for individuals looking to build a strong foundation in enterprise networking, with opportunities to develop skills across Cisco & Juniper technologies, Microsoft networking services, and cloud platforms. The successful candidate will gain hands-on experience while contributing to network operations, documentation, and project support activities.
Specific Skills
Required Qualifications & Experience
Bachelorâs degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Telecommunications Engineering, or a related field.
Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification, or demonstrable progress toward achieving CCNA within 12 months of employment.
>4 years of experience in network support or a related IT role (internships and academic projects considered).
Foundational understanding of networking concepts including TCP/IP, subnetting, VLANs, and basic routing and switching.
Familiarity with Cisco IOS and Juniper Junos command-line interfaces for basic device configuration.
Basic knowledge of Windows Server environments, particularly DNS and DHCP services.
Understanding of fundamental network security principles.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively within a team environment.
Strong desire to learn, grow, and develop professionally within the networking field.
Responsible For
Core Responsibilities
Network Monitoring & Support
Monitor network performance using established tools (e.g., SolarWinds, PRTG, Nagios) and escalate issues to the Senior Network Engineer as required.
Perform routine network maintenance tasks including scheduled updates, patches, and configuration backups.
Assist in maintaining network uptime by responding to alerts and performing initial diagnostics.
Troubleshooting & Issue Resolution
Troubleshoot basic network issues including connectivity problems, VLAN configurations, and user access issues.
Use diagnostic tools such as Wireshark and command-line utilities to identify and resolve common network faults.
Document troubleshooting steps and resolutions to build the teamâs knowledge base.
Configuration & Implementation Support
Assist the Senior Network Engineer with configuring Cisco and Juniper devices (switches, routers, firewalls, wireless access points) according to established standards.
Support the configuration and maintenance of Windows Server network services including DNS, DHCP, and basic Active Directory networking.
Help deploy and test network equipment under supervision.
Documentation & Reporting
Maintain accurate network documentation including topology diagrams, IP address inventories, and device configurations.
Prepare regular reports on network performance, incidents, and maintenance activities.
Update asset registers and configuration management databases as changes occur.
Project & Team Support
Participate in network-related projects under the direction of senior team members.
Provide first-line support to end users for network-related queries and issues.
Collaborate with other IT teams to ensure seamless service delivery.
Additional Requirements
Exposure to network monitoring tools such as SolarWinds, PRTG, or Nagios.
Basic understanding of firewall technologies (Cisco ASA/Firepower, Juniper SRX) and VPN concepts (IPsec, SSL VPN).
Familiarity with wireless networking standards and configuration.
Awareness of cloud networking concepts, particularly Microsoft Azure fundamentals.
Experience with packet capture and analysis tools such as Wireshark.
Knowledge of VoIP and Quality of Service (QoS) concepts is an advantage
