On behalf of Our client in the Manufacturing Sector, we are looking for competent and experienced Mechanical Engineer to be based in Kampala. Reports To: Operations Manager Duty Station: Kampala, Uganda. Job Summary: The Mechanical Engineer will design, maintain, troubleshoot, and improve mechanical systems and equipment in the company. The role ensures high equipment reliability, minimizes production downtime in continuous lines, supports preventive maintenance, drives mechanical upgrades. Main Duties and Responsibilities - Oversee maintenance, repair, and overhaul of mechanical equipment including rolling mills, galvanizing pots, coating applicators, roll-forming stands, slitters, cut-to-length lines, conveyors, hydraulic/pneumatic actuators, gearboxes, bearings, pumps, fans, and structural components.
- Lead troubleshooting and root cause analysis (RCA) for mechanical breakdowns, vibrations, wear, misalignment, or failures to restore production rapidly and prevent recurrence.
- Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs using CMMS to achieve high asset uptime in 24/7 operations.
- Design and specify mechanical modifications, upgrades, or new installations
- Prepare technical drawings, BOMs, specifications, and maintenance procedures using CAD software.
- Conduct equipment condition assessments, reliability studies, and failure mode analysis (FMEA) to recommend spare parts strategies and life-cycle improvements.
- Manage mechanical projects including planning, budgeting, contractor supervision, commissioning, and handover.
- Collaborate with electrical engineers, production, quality, and procurement teams to resolve cross-functional issues, support process trials, and reduce defects.
- Train technicians and operators on mechanical maintenance best practices, safe handling, and troubleshooting.
- Participate in energy minimization initiatives and continuous improvement projects.
Qualifications, Experience, and Skills - Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field from a recognized institution.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in mechanical engineering within a manufacturing environment, preferably in steel, metal processing, or similar industries.
- Experience on SAP ERP or related.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical principles, including motion, mechanics, materials, and structural analysis.
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks) for drafting and design.
- Experience with maintenance programs for industrial equipment like furnaces, casters, or coating lines.
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and project management abilities.
- Familiarity with safety standards and regulatory compliance in Uganda's manufacturing sector.
- Detail-oriented, team player, able to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment, and committed to continuous improvement.
- Experience in steelmaking or roofing product manufacturing; knowledge of Aluminum-Zinc coating technology.
