Legal Advocate Officer – SGBV Program 2025-07-25T17:58:57+00:00 Nyaka https://cdn.ugashare.com/jsjobsdata/data/employer/comp_5957/logo/dsas.png https://nyakaglobal.org/ FULL_TIME Kambuga, Kanungu Uganda 00256 Uganda Nonprofit, and NGO Legal 2025-08-04T17:00:00+00:00 Uganda 8 Job Purpose The Legal Advocate Officer will support survivors of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) in Rukungiri (and any other area as may be asked by supervisor) by providing legal guidance, case referrals, follow-up, and coordination with justice actors. Working under the SGBV department, the officer will ensure that survivors have access to justice and are supported throughout the legal process while promoting legal rights awareness in the community. Key Responsibilities - Receive, document, and assess legal cases related to SGBV from survivors, perpetrators and communities.
- Offer legal counselling, guidance, and support to survivors, particularly women and children.
- Refer cases to appropriate justice actors (police, courts, legal aid providers) and follow up to ensure progress.
- Liaise with Local Council Courts, Uganda Police (Family and Child Protection Unit), probation offices, and magistrate courts.
- Support in organizing and facilitating mobile legal clinics and community legal awareness events.
- Work closely with Community-Based Paralegals and Community SGBV Focal Persons to identify and respond to legal issues in the community.
- Prepare weekly and monthly legal case reports, and ensure proper filing and documentation.
- Conduct community sensitization on key SGBV laws, survivor rights, and referral pathways.
- Ensure survivors are protected, their confidentiality is upheld.
- Participate in multi-sectoral case conferencing and coordination meetings.
- Assist in monitoring the implementation of relevant SGBV policies at the local level.
Qualifications and Experience - A Diploma or Degree in Law from a recognized institution.
- Experience in legal aid, community justice, or SGBV response work is an added advantage.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the legal framework on SGBV in Uganda (e.g., Domestic Violence Act, Penal Code, Children Act).
- Basic knowledge of case handling procedures and working with vulnerable populations.
- Experience in community sensitization and rights-based approaches.
Key Competencies and Requirements - Must be able to ride a motorcycle and possess a valid motorcycle riding license.
- Fluency in Rukiga and/or Runyankore is a mandatory requirement.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills.
- Ability to work independently and in a team in rural and low-resource environments.
- Strong ethical grounding, confidentiality, and respect for survivor-centered approaches.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to produce timely and accurate case reports.
Preferred Additional Skills - Basic computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, email).
- Knowledge of the local justice system and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) practices.
- Previous experience working in South-Western Uganda is an added advantage.
