Job Description/Requirements Hospice Africa Uganda (HAU) is a not-for-profit charitable NGO which was established in 1993 with the vision “Palliative Care for all in need in Africa”. HAU is registered by the NGO Bureau as a local NGO and is a licensed Private not-for profit (PNFP) health facility registered by the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners’ Council (UMDPC). HAU owns the Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care in Africa (IHPCA) which is accredited by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) to offer short certificate courses, diplomas, bachelors, and post graduate diplomas and masters in palliative care. HAU has 3 objectives: To provide an affordable and culturally appropriate clinical service to patients suffering from Cancer, HIV/AIDS, and/ or other life-threatening illnesses. 2. To offer education in Palliative Care to health and non-health professionals. 3. To support the spread of Palliative Care to other African Countries. HAU has three hospice sites; Hospice Kampala, Mobile Hospice Mbarara in Mbarara district and Little Hospice Hoima in Hoima Oil City. HAU promotes modern methods of pain and symptom control as well as “whole-person” (holistic) centered care for patients and families living with cancer, HIV/AIDS, and other life-threatening and life-limiting conditions. HAU wishes to recruit dynamic, skilled, and caring Ugandans committed to palliative care to fill the following position: Title: Health Services Coordinator Location: Hoima JOB PURPOSE: To oversee the provision of comprehensive and integrated care for patients with life-threatening illnesses and their families at Hospice, in Hospital and in the community while supporting onsite training for all health professionals and non-professionals across the continuum in palliative care knowledge and skills. SPECIFIC DUTIES: Patient Care and Education: - To plan, organize, implement, and evaluate comprehensive and integrated care for the patients and families at Hospice, in Hospitals, and community,
- Provide support and counseling to the patient, family, and other carers,
- Lead the clinical team in planning appropriate patient- and family-centered care in the hospital wards and in the community
- Give information concerning the disease, medication plus care needed to patients and relatives,
- Oversee the logistics and ensure that they are accessible to patients whenever possible.
- Take part in health education and health promotion of patients and family members,
- Develop and maintain appropriate information, education, and communication materials for patients and their families,
- Liaise with other health professionals for appropriate patient consultations and referrals for care.
Research: - To complete basic/ essential training or course in research in order to build the department and organization’s capacity for research,
- Participate in clinical research and audit, Collect important information for continuous improvement of the PC service and its delivery, and collate information for special projects.
Advocacy: - Advocate for the welfare of patients admitted in hospitals, in the community, and those enrolled in research studies,
- Actively promote access to comprehensive quality palliative care to people living with HIV/AIDS and cancer and their families;
- Participate in academic/scientific writing including writing abstracts for conferences,
- Advocate for patients and represent HAU at Case conferences, Journal Clubs, and Scientific forums.
Minimum requirements: - Diploma in Nursing or its equivalent, with training in Palliative Care.
- Experience in Palliative Care both clinical and education for at least 3 years. Registration with the Nurses’ Council.
