Position Summary The Fine Art Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality, engaging, and effective instruction in Fine Art to secondary school students in the Serere community, in line with the national curriculum. The role combines strong subject mastery with practical, learner-centered teaching methods, equipping students with drawing, painting, design, and craft skills, as well as creative and critical thinking abilities, needed for academic advancement, self-expression, and future careers in art and design. The Fine Art Teacher works closely with the Director of Studies, fellow subject teachers, and AsOne Ministries leadership to promote academic excellence and nurture studentsâ creativity and confidence in the visual arts within a Christ-centered learning environment. Key Responsibilities Curriculum Delivery & Instruction - Plan, prepare, and deliver Fine Art lessons in line with the national secondary curriculum and Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) syllabus requirements.
- Develop schemes of work, lesson plans, and assessment schedules for all assigned classes (O-Level and/or A-Level as applicable).
- Deliver clear, engaging lessons that build strong skills in drawing, painting, design, lettering, and three-dimensional (3D) work, along with an understanding of art history, theory, and criticism.
- Use varied teaching methods, demonstrations, and hands-on studio practice to accommodate different learning styles and ability levels.
- Set, administer, and mark class tests, practical assignments, coursework portfolios, and examinations, providing timely and constructive feedback.
- Track learner performance and progress, identifying gaps and providing remedial support where needed.
- Prepare students for national examinations (UCE/UACE), including practical examination components and coursework/portfolio submission, ensuring full syllabus coverage within the academic calendar.
- Guide students in the study of local and international art forms, design principles, and craft techniques relevant to the Ugandan cultural context.
- Integrate creativity, cultural heritage appreciation, and entrepreneurial application of art and craft skills in line with Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) guidelines.
Practical & Studio Instruction - Plan and supervise practical art lessons, studio sessions, and craft-making activities using a range of media (pencil, paint, clay, textiles, found/local materials).
- Guide students in the safe and correct use of art tools, materials, and equipment, including cutting tools, paints, and kilns/ovens where applicable.
- Maintain art studio/room equipment and materials, and coordinate with school administration on procurement of art supplies.
- Ensure health and safety standards are observed during all practical, studio, and craft-based activities.
- Organize art exhibitions, craft fairs, school decoration projects, or cultural/creative activities that reinforce classroom learning with real-world and community application.
Student Guidance & Mentorship - Mentor students interested in art, design, and craft-related career paths, including further studies in fine art, graphic design, architecture, and creative industries.
- Encourage participation in art clubs, craft/design competitions, exhibitions, and academic showcases.
- Provide guidance and support to students struggling with Fine Art concepts or techniques, including extra practical tuition where needed.
- Model discipline, creativity, and a strong work ethic that inspires confidence in artistic and craft skills, and reflects Christian values.
- Support students in developing marketable art and craft skills that align with AsOne Ministriesâ focus on sustainable livelihoods and enterprise.
Resource & Records Management - Maintain accurate records of student attendance, performance, and continuous assessment/portfolio work in line with school policy.
- Contribute to the budgeting and procurement process for art materials, tools, textbooks, and teaching aids.
- Ensure proper care, maintenance, and stock control of art tools, materials, studentsâ work/portfolios, and instructional resources.
- Maintain an organized bank of past papers, sample portfolios, and revision aids to support examination preparation.
Teamwork & Collaboration - Work collaboratively with the Director of Studies and fellow subject teachers to align academic planning.
- Participate in departmental meetings, staff briefings, and school-wide events.
- Collaborate with school leadership on co-curricular activities, including art clubs, cultural days, and creative/enterprise projects.
- Engage parents and the local community in supporting studentsâ practical art and craft learning, including linking students to local artisans or craft markets where appropriate.
Other Duties - Perform additional duties as assigned by school leadership as needs arise.
What Weâre Looking For Required Qualifications & Experience - Education: Bachelorâs Degree or Diploma in Education, with Fine Art as a teaching subject, or a related field (Art and Design, Industrial Fine Art, or equivalent).
- Experience: Minimum of 2 yearsâ teaching experience at secondary school level, preferably teaching Fine Art.
- Sound knowledge of the national secondary Fine Art curriculum, UNEB syllabus, and Ministry of Education and Sports guidelines.
- Practical experience and demonstrated skill across drawing, painting, design, and craft/3D techniques.
- Registered/licensed with the relevant Ugandan teaching body where applicable (e.g., valid Teaching Practice Certificate/registration with the Ministry of Education and Sports).
- A demonstrated personal Christian faith and commitment to Christ-centered education.
Behavioral Competencies - Passionate about teaching and mentoring young people in creative and artistic expression.
- Patient, clear, and skilled at breaking down technical or abstract artistic concepts for learners at different levels.
