Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is an independently governed institute within the College of Health Sciences at Makerere University and has the mission “To strengthen health systems in Africa, with a strong emphasis on infectious diseases, through research and capacity development.” IDI has operations across Uganda as well as in a number of other African countries and has a staffing of over 1,000 managing multiple projects in research, clinical services, public health and training.
Job Summary: The Biomedical Engineering Technician is a member of the Operations section under the finance and administration department. He/She is responsible for the installation, maintenance, calibration, and repair of Biomedical equipment and devices critical to the functioning of the laboratory settings, and ensures that all biomedical equipment operates safely, reliably, and effectively. He/she will collaborate with other engineering staff to ensure the effective integration of technology to enhance capabilities.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Equipment Maintenance: Perform scheduled maintenance, inspections, and calibration of medical equipment to ensure it meets manufacturer specifications and safety standards.
- Repairs: Diagnose and troubleshoot equipment malfunctions, perform repairs, and replace faulty parts to restore equipment functionality.
- Installation: Assist in the installation and setup of new medical devices and equipment, ensuring proper functionality and compliance with regulatory standards.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate records of maintenance, repairs, inspections, and equipment performance, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Safety Checks: Conduct safety checks and quality assurance testing on biomedical equipment to prevent malfunctions and ensure patient and staff safety.
- Inventory Management: Manage and track spare parts, tools, and equipment inventory, ensuring availability for timely repairs and maintenance.
- User Support: Provide technical support and training to healthcare staff on the proper use, maintenance, and troubleshooting of medical equipment.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure that all biomedical equipment adheres to relevant regulations and standards. Stay abreast of changes in regulations and update equipment accordingly
- Occupational Health and Safety: Ensure all work adheres to relevant healthcare and safety standards, including FDA, ISO, and local regulations. Performs all duties as a member of the Fire Alarm Response Team, and in conjunction with the OHSE team, enforces safety standards
- Collaboration: Work closely with biomedical and Electrical engineers, IDI medical and laboratory staff, and other technicians to support clinical operations and optimize equipment usage.
- Training and Support: Provide training to Laboratory personnel on the proper use, maintenance, and troubleshooting of biomedical Equipment
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Diploma in Biomedical Engineering Technology, Electronics, or a related field.
- Relevant professional Certification from a recognized institution is a plus
- A degree will be an added advantage
- Strong knowledge of biomedical equipment, diagnostic technologies, and laboratory processes
- Relevant professional Certification from a recognized institution is a plus.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team
- Experience:
- Proven Three (3) years of experience in maintaining and repairing Biomedical equipment, preferably in a clinical laboratory or hospital setting.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of medical devices, electronic circuits, troubleshooting techniques, and diagnostic tools.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose complex technical issues.
- Ability to meticulously perform maintenance tasks and document all procedures accurately.
- Effective communication skills, with the ability to explain technical issues to non-technical staff.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.

- Critical-thinking skills: the ability to compare and contrast the available options and choose the most viable one to solve problems and make decisions
- Quality Awareness
- Computer literate/Information systems knowledge
- Ability to prepare reports and work estimates
- Certification as a Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET) or similar credentials.
- Familiarity with hospital policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
- Knowledge of software used in medical equipment and hospital information systems.
