JOB DETAILS: Job Description Project Name: Children’s Heart Project Position Title: Deputy Project Manager Position End Date: Open Reports To: CHP Project Manager Summary Samaritan’s Purse International Relief is a non-denominational Christian organization with over 30 years of experience delivering relief and development aid in over 100 countries. The Children’s Heart Project began in 1997 bringing children with congenital heart defects to North America for surgery. In 2003, the Children’s Heart Project implemented this project in Uganda. Since 1997, the Children’s Heart Project has helped over 1300 children receive lifesaving surgery. Responsibilities: The Children’s Heart Deputy Project Manager will be accountable for the following responsibilities and activities including but not limited to: • Provide professional representation of SP and CHP to all medical partners including hospital administrators, pediatric cardiologists, pediatricians, and cardiothoracic surgeons. • Preparations for screening work with the International Patient Coordinator and CHP Director to ensure children are scheduled for screenings and all documentation is obtained through the CHP staff. • Work closely with the CHP Project Manager in medical screenings to assist all children on the evaluation and follow-up lists; facilitating a logical schedule and evaluation as needed. • Prioritize all children as high risk e.g., severely malnourished or very sick. • Arrange appointments at UHI or an appropriate alternative clinic for any child’s follow-up medical evaluation due to illness or deterioration of status; notify Project Manager and CHP Director immediately. Then, assist in the process of physician evaluations, labs, x-rays, ECHOs, CT scans, or any other relevant documentation. • Complete insurance forms for guardian and interpreter within 2 weeks after heart surgery, authorizing the Project Manager and CHP Director to sign. Ensure every minor has significant documentation and accompanying documentation to ensure the proper guardian is verified as well as all legal requirements are met. • Prepare all children with pre-approved cardiologists in hospital evaluations including x-rays, medical examinations, and medical follow-up before travel. • Assist with the interviews to select an appropriate guardian for the CHP child and their travel while in the region. • Facilitate Fit for Travel appointments: these are written evaluations of children accepted for surgery to be done before their departure to North America. There is one to be done with the pre-approved cardiologist to ensure no test spells, appropriate saturations, and medication review between 1 month and 1 week before travel. Then Fit for Surgery appointments to be done with a pre-approved pediatrician to rule out any Respiratory Tract Infections, colds, fevers, malaria, or other infectious processes. • Fit for surgery should be done a minimum of 10, 7 days, 4 days, and 3 days. Notify Project Manager and CHP Director immediately of any infectious process or symptoms (runny nose, fever, chills, aches, diarrhea, etc.). • Obtain discharge records/recommendations from North American hospitals and coordinate with national pediatric cardiologists to ensure continuity of care of post-surgical CHP patients. • Provide medical oversight as you consult and liaise with Uganda Heart Institute, visiting teams, medical examinations, and medical follow-up of CHP children. • Assist visiting pediatric cardiologists with screening and evaluation of children. • Provide medical oversight for special needs children. • Provide ongoing communication to HQ i.e., CHP Director. • Preparing the medical aspect of Monthly Executive reports. • Lead briefing sessions with beneficiaries. • All other duties deemed necessary by the Country Administrator or CHP Director. Education / Experience Needed • Registered Nurse with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. • Experience in pediatrics and cardiology. • 3 years of experience working with children. • 2 years of experience working with an NGO. • Be flexible and able to work in an emergency environment. Skills Required • Ability to work with minimal supervision. • Possess interpersonal skills. • Excellent leadership skills. • Proficient computer skills (Microsoft Packages). • Ability to be flexible and adapt as required. • Excellent organizational skills, communication skills, written and verbal. • Understanding and sensitivity to local culture is essential.
