Job Title: Assistant Manager–Tax and Compliance

Our client is a Manufacturing Company based in Mukono, Uganda with a large focus on premium edible oils and soap manufacturing, production and distribution. On behalf of our client we are looking for a competent and experienced Asst. Manager–Tax and Compliance to be based in Mukono, Uganda.
Job Summary: This role involves ensuring the company’s operations fully comply with all national and international laws, as well as internal policies and procedures. This also involves developing, reviewing, and implementing policies, procedures, and best practices to ensure regulatory adherence and effective risk management.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Tax Compliance Management
- Ensure the timely and accurate preparation and submission of all statutory filings, including but not limited to income tax returns, VAT returns, withholding tax returns, excise duty, DTS, NSSF, and company returns.
- Conduct regular internal audits to identify potential areas of non-compliance and implement corrective actions, including staff training and follow-up on compliance with these corrective measures.
- Develop, monitor, and assess governance, risk, and compliance control systems to prevent or address violations of legislative or regulatory compliance.
- Champion the development and implementation of tax planning strategies to optimize available tax incentives for the company.
- Stay informed of changes in tax laws and regulations in Uganda, assess their impact on the company, and advise management (including providing training to staff) on necessary adjustments to ensure compliance.
- Collaborate with tax/legal advisors to handle all direct, indirect, and personal tax inquiries and assessments issued by the respective authorities. Make or review provisional taxes as necessary.
- Manage communication related to all outstanding tax matters in dispute, including assessments, tax demands, and ongoing tax compliance audits.
Financial Analysis, Reporting
- Conduct internal Audits on all company transactions to ascertain correctness and accuracy to limit any exposures the company may face from not compliance to internal policies, procedures and in compliance to Tax procedures act.
- Prepare financial data analysis and support IT-enabled reporting, including the electronic filing of tax returns and other related financial reports for senior management and external regulatory bodies as required.
- Coordinate with relevant departments to gather the necessary financial and operational data for tax compliance purposes. Scrutinize and review all supporting schedules and third-party documentation before submitting them as evidence to authorities.
- Contribute to the preparation of financial management accounts, including statements of financial position, income statements, and other financial statements that detail the periodic performance of the business and forecasts.
- Respond to financial inquiries by gathering, analyzing, summarizing, and interpreting data to support decision-making.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all tax-related documentation, correspondence, and data quality reviews, ensuring improvements in the efficiency and accuracy of reports.
Tax Advisory
- Provide advice on tax matters and keep management informed on the best course of action to mitigate any risks to the brand and company reputation.
- Prepare, provide, and maintain supporting documentation for all internal and external audits conducted by authorized agencies.
- Perform tax risk analysis and provide advisory services, keeping a close eye on transfer pricing laws (related party transactions), imported services, and customs regulations. Prepare periodic reports on tax compliance activities, highlighting key findings, risks, and recommendations for the Board and Management.
- Collaborate with other departments to promote a culture of compliance across the organization.
- Provide guidance and training to finance and operational teams on compliance matters.
Budget Management
- Participate in the budgeting process by providing input from various cost centers.
- Ensure proper documentation and maintain a complete, accurate, and organized accounting and filing system for all financial transactions.
- Develop and oversee financial control systems to prevent or address violations of legal guidelines and internal policies. These systems should enable the timely identification of variances from the operating budget and drive the appropriate behaviors to achieve financial objectives.
- Scrutinize all payments for budget conformity and ensure compliance with the budget process.
Stakeholder Management
- Lead tax planning and stakeholder engagement by representing the company in tax tribunal matters with the tax authority when applicable.
- Coordinate with relevant government agencies and departments to gather necessary financial and operational data for tax compliance purposes. Scrutinize and review all supporting schedules and third-party documentation before submitting them as evidence to the authorities.
- Ensure the regular review and updating of processes and procedures in line with changes to International Reporting Standards, regulations, and statutory requirements.
- Contribute to the management and implementation of finance-related projects within the business.
Safety Management
- Ensuring all Occupational Health, safety and Environmental standards are compiled to keep an organization accident-free
- Report unsafe activities and Practices by Strictly adhering to EHS procedures
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and Finance, Tax Management, Business Administration with option (Accounting and Finance) or related accounting course with CPA or ACCA Qualified or equivalent Knowledge.
- Understanding of tax software and accounting systems.
- At least 5 years’ experience in financial and accounting profession and with 2-3 years in Tax and supervisory role especially in a busy Manufacturing environment.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex tax legislation and apply it to practical scenarios.
- Ability to prepare and file accurate tax returns, ensuring compliance with deadlines.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to monitor regulatory changes and ensure adherence.
- Strong knowledge of ERP systems and accounting software.
- Strong technical skills.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.
Barriers to Success in Role
- Limited or lack of technical knowledge of tax software and accounting systems.
- Inability to accurately prepare tax-related documents and reports and business acumen.
