Founded in 1970, Katalemwa Cheshire Home for Rehabilitation Services (KCH) is a disability-focused NGO that provides rehabilitation services to children aged 0-18 years and young persons aged 19-24 years with disabilities. We offer quality medical care, socio-economic support, and the fabrication of orthopaedic appliances. Our work is executed through a network of partner organizations, Centre and Community-Based Inclusive Development (CBID), Rights-Based Programming (RBP), and close collaboration with families, communities, civil society, development partners, and the government.
About the RISE Project
KCH, in consortium with Save the Children International (SCI), Humanity & Inclusion (HI), Education Local Expertise Centre (ELECU), Young African Refugees for Integral Development (YARID), Humanitarian Development and Assistance Services (HADS), and Uganda Society for Disabled Children (USDC), is implementing a two-year RISE project (2025-2027) in the refugee settlements of Nakivale, Rwamwanja, and Kyangwali in South-Western Uganda. The project aims to provide comprehensive rehabilitation and inclusive education services to refugees and host communities.
Job Summary: Â The Physiotherapists will be stationed within the refugee settlements and will be responsible for providing rehabilitation services to children and young persons with disabilities at home, school and community. They will assess, diagnose, and provide treatment and other interventions to CWDs and YWDs, work closely with caregivers, and contribute to community awareness and capacity-building initiatives.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct comprehensive physiotherapy assessments and develop individualized treatment plans for children and young persons with disabilities.
- Provide rehabilitation services, including therapeutic exercises, mobility training, and assistive device recommendations.
- Work closely with caregivers to build their capacity in home-based care and therapy.
- Collaborate with rehabilitation and other professionals in the consortia and other refugee agencies to provide holistic care.
- Facilitate, measurements, fitting, training of proper use, maintenance and minor repair for mobility, prosthetics, orthotics and other assistive devices.
- Conduct community outreach programs to raise awareness about disability inclusion and rehabilitation.
- Participate in case review meetings and provide regular reports on rehabilitation interventions.
- Ensure proper documentation of client progress and maintain accurate records in line with project requirements.
- Train community-based volunteers to identify and refer children and young persons with disabilities for appropriate interventions.
- Engage in advocacy efforts to promote the rights of persons with disabilities within refugee communities.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Minimum of Diploma in Physiotherapy from a recognized institution
- Registration with the Uganda Allied Health Professionals Council.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in physiotherapy, preferably in a humanitarian or community-based setting.
- Experience working with children with disabilities in an NGO or Government setting.
Person Specifications
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Cultural sensitivity and experience working with diverse populations.
- Willingness to work in remote refugee settlements.
- Strong organizational and reporting skills.
Added Advantage
- Familiarity with the local languages spoken in refugee settlements.
- Previous experience working with refugees or in humanitarian settings.
- Ability to ride a motorcycle with a valid riding permit.
Hours of Work
The Physiotherapists will work 40 hours per week, following the organization’s standard working hours. However, flexibility may be required based on project needs.
