JOB DETAILS: The MRC/UVRI & LSHTM Uganda Research Unit is an internationally recognized centre of excellence for research and training. The Unit was established in 1988 to improve the understanding and control of the HIV epidemic in Uganda and globally, following a request from the Uganda Government to the United Kingdom (UK) Government. After wide consultations, and in response to the changing public health landscape, Unit work has broadened beyond HIV to include other infections, neglected, endemic, emerging and reemerging infections and non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Our mission is to conduct high-quality research that adds knowledge and leads to improved control of infectious and non-communicable diseases in Uganda, Africa and globally, through translation of scientific findings into policy and practice, and rigorous research capacity building. The Unit is now seeking enthusiastic and experienced individuals to fill the following position: Station: Kibuku, Tororo, Namutumba, Butaleja Job Purpose The position holder will primarily conduct malaria testing and DBS collection from four project districts; Roles & Responsibilities • Prepare study participants for sample collection and testing; • To conduct malaria testing with Rapid Diagnostic tests (RDTs) in the study sites; • Collection of whole blood samples on filter papers (Dried blood spots); • Ensure proper labelling and storage of dried blood spots; • Ensure proper transportation of dried blood spots from the study sites to the main laboratories in Entebbe; • Complete and ensure safe storage study data collection tools; • Manage and account for study supplies received; • Adherence to the Good laboratory practices (GLP) and safety guidelines; and, • Conduct data cleaning and entry into the electronic system. Person Specification • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology from a recognized institution, registered with Allied health professionals’ council; • Should possess at least 2 years of experience in malaria research and malaria testing procedures; • Experience in conducting malaria tests, collection of dried blood spots, field work and surveys is required; • Should possess knowledge of research, field activities and collection of dried blood spots (DBS) • Personal integrity and emotional resourcefulness; • Ability to learn and thoroughness; • Reliability; and, • Openness to others.
